Time Magazine on college

http://nation.time.com/2012/10/18/degrees-of-difficulty/

Students are not ready for college, it costs more, they still don’t learn, it doesn’t prepare them for a job, they don’t get a job and they are left with more debt.

This is from diversity, admin costs for managing diversity and federal rules on diversity, foreign students, etc.

Grad school STEM fellowships are for foreign students to a large extent.  This is by design.

American colleges are not about helping but hurting the native born.  They are a system of replacement.  That is their purpose. They do it well.

Lifetime estimates of higher earning for college grads are based on 30 to 50 year horizons that are based then on the experience of grads from 30 to 50 years.

If you go back to the 1970s, income inequality was much lower and the top 1 percent got 10 percent of national income instead of 25 percent as they do now with immigration and guest workers pushing down wages of blue and white collar workers.

If college grads in computer programming are hired at age 27 and fired at age 40 to be replaced by a young immigrant, then a computer programming degree doesn’t give them a million more in lifetime earnings based on grads in the 1970s or 1960s who graduated at age 22 and retired at age 65 in a high paying white collar job with benefits.

Some of these old cohorts even got defined benefit pensions, which no longer exist except for public unions and public officials.  This part of the extra earnings is therefore bogus for people in the private sector.

Lawyers who don’t get a prestige job out of law school may have a lifetime of low earnings, most of which is not reported by the law  schools.

The universities cook the books on what their grads make from the time they graduate to lifetime earnings.  So the chart of rising millions for more degrees is fiction.

Higher education’s main focus is diversity.  It is not STEM education.  It is not teaching math.  It is not mathematical thinking.

Many students at schools like Thomas Jefferson or Stuyvesant place out of calculus in college and never take any math course in college.  This is a disaster way to think.  The reason is they think STEM jobs go to foreigners.  So they avoid learning STEM courses.

They want to be lawyers. But law is now glutted and it under reports the lawyers with no job or low income.

Higher ed is a scam now.  A scam that permeates the apathy to whether students learn math in college.

If students take math every semester from K to 12 why should they stop taking math every semester in college?  That makes no sense at all.

It does make sense if college is a scam.  If every student in college had to take math every semester, then it would become evident that a large fraction are not college material. That fraction would be largely composed of diversity.  That is why the colleges don’t require math every semester in this age of technology.

How do you tell when a politician or university administrator is lying?  When they use the word STEM.
