The math ed establishment is trying not to understand what is wrong with elementary math education. It is not they don’t understand and are trying to learn. They are actively trying not to understand.
They instead try to win points in meaningless debates. This sidesteps discussion that is meaningful.
This indicates they believe something else is the problem. That something else is they don’t think that universal education in math is feasible except for the simplest drills.
They are trying to protect themselves. This is why the teacher union in Chicago was so focused on eliminating high stakes testing so that teachers are not fired for the unteachable.
This understanding avoidance of the math ed establishment is part of everything they do.
